Sustainability

Rowing is a nautical sport and depends for its practice of "clean water" and this is only one of the reasons why we should worry about taking care of the environment and we must be aware that the future of our modality depends of actions related to sustainability and enviroment care.

The Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon has been undergoing several cleaning and decontamination process in recent years, culminating in the process carried out to host the rowing and canoeing competitions of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, where we obtained very good levels of water quality control with the samples collected in these two events. The Olympic environmental legacy has shown us that the complete decontamination of Lagoa is possible and it is our challenge and responsibility to continue this process.

Following the example of the International Rowing Federation (FISA), and as part of a sports federation, we believe we have the responsibility to apply practices aimed at sustainability and care for the environment with the following objectives:

  • Increase awareness of the importance of conserving the environment;

  • Seek partnerships with Governments, Universities, Non-Governmental Organizations, Communities, aiming to integrate the various areas of knowledge in the solutions of existing problems;

  • To disseminate ecologically correct knowledge and technological developments in order to boost the progress of rowing clubs without compromising the environment and quality of life;

  • To establish standards, criteria and standards related to the control and maintenance of areas of sports practice, with a view to the rational use of environmental resources;

Our Project "Row to Preserve" is the first step in this process and is being created with the objective of using the rowing modality allied to the teaching of environmental education, as the main tool for building social and environmental responsibility, training children and adolescents regularly enrolled in Public schools, who live in areas of socio-environmental vulnerability, to assume the role of conscious citizens, who understand their reality and are able to transform it.
